A wine from Haut-Medoc.

Every now and then I come across a wine which makes me just go "Wow!" This is one of those. Still quite youthful, even from a half bottle, deeply coloured and opaque. A touch subdued on the nose but an absolute explosion of flavours on the palate - rich, sweet fruit and a density of flavour on the palate that is quite wonderful. Powerful tannins grip and are firm but remarkably ripe and rounded. Huge aftertaste and an enormous and chewy aftertaste. This is a fabulous wine which will drink well for the next 5-10 years. 94/100. Drunk 25 Aug 2014.

Excellent, I have a box of these so you can imagine how my old heart leapt at the news. 94 Alex points is high praise indeed. Even though it sounds a bit atypical for a Cantemerle.

Had a lovely 05 Sociando Mallet the other day, perfect drinking by a lake in the sun, double decanted a few hours. The choice of chateau was based on AHB's insistence elsewhere that S-M is always worth a try. My question: is 05 a reasonably consistent, young-drinking vintage?

I really don't know. I've had quite a few little ones and a couple of medium sized 2005s, they've all been good and I think they will last, on the principle that good wines have a better chance of growing up into old good wines than wines that start out bad.
