2003 Gruaud Larose

Post by LGTrotter »

Bought from Berry's at £276/case in bond en primeur.

A bit young to tell I think. A good compact feel to the wine on opening but the palate remained rather disjointed throughout the bottle. Initially it was the front of the palate which seemed to be missing but later this became a rather large pothole in the mid palate. A lot of underbrush, a little bit of oak in there too, which was quiet and well integrated. A very dark wine, no real sign of browning at the rim. Typical Gruaud in that it is a burly, chunky drink, not typically Saint Julien though. I will quite happily drink my way through the rest of the case, not sure I'd rush out to buy more at current prices.

There has been speculation about the 2003 not being as good as touted by Messer's Parker et al and at being a vintage which is likely to collapse in a heap. I don't think this style of vintage particularly suits me, but I wouldn't have thought it will fall apart soon and there is something a bit teetering about this. I shall try to leave the rest for five-ish more years.
