Cellar Build

I mentioned in my introductory post that I was planning to convert my garage into a cellar. That was 8 months ago. Not much progress has been made since then.

I thought I would start a thread where I can share progress on my little project. Maybe this will encourage me to get on and do something. I will post some pictures of the starting point. When I say no progress has been made since January, that is not quite true. The garage has had a massive clearance which now means I can actually get into it. I have also started to run the electric cabling, and started to fix joist extenders to allow deeper insulation to go under the roof.

This is quite an interesting project. Best of luck for it.
Two years ago I pondered with an improved wine cellar myself, but was too lazy and in the end just bought a big wine fridge (for max. 312 Bordeaux-shaped bottles). However, I did some research on building it. I found Richard M. Gold's "How and Why to Build a Wine Cellar" ( 250 p., ISBN: 978-1891267000) really good for this. I can really recommend that book for this purpose.

Thx Andre-I'll take a look at that! A garage is not really the ideal starting point for a wine cellar, hence the need to stick some serious insulation in there to start with. My aim is to get it well insulated and airtight, so hopefully it will not need huge amounts of energy to keep it between 10 and 15 degrees, heating in Winter and cooling in Summer.

Have you thought of building a cellar beneath the garage? By this you could get a very good passive insulation. Perhaps something like this:

Fiercely expensive. But very beautiful. If I hit capacity in the garage then maybe one day.
