Following its
refurbishment, we need to re-test
The Bung Hole. Those with long memories will recall that, at The Bung Hole on Monday 16
th January 2012, originally for the purpose of testing the then-new location, we held a small vertical of Croft (
planning and arrangements,
review of the evening as a whole). Perhaps we could re-use this theme.
I propose the traditional small vertical of Croft. For which I will need to adopt.
However, given the hypothesised limitations of the refurbished Bung Hole, this is
limited to eight people.

I would love to attend. I will have a look at what is to hand, but I would imagine a 60 or 66.

If it could be the Wednesday or Thursday I'd be keen. Could add 63 and/or 70, but would need to retrieve from storage asap...

We’ll aim for those dates, unless consensus is completely against you.

Also, reviewing photographs, the room I had in mind could accommodate eight. So I have edited the above post to allow eight. But not more.
I envisage closing the moveable partition (it swings towards the television until flush against the wall), and doubling the table so that, in effect, each of us has 29½″×29½″ of space.

I could make 29th but not 30th.
I have plenty of Croft (such as half bottles of the 2004 LBV) and will bring something appropriate - assuming I can attend - once I've seen what other bottles are present.

My "plenty of Croft" turns out to be mostly in storage and therefore not easily accessible before 29th October.
However, to keep the continuity of the vertical I do have a 1955 at home and can bring that to add to the line-up.

Small compensation for having to withdraw from the RP tasting but please consider me in. I can put up what I believe is a Cr50 that I am picking up next week. I'll reserve judgement but it doesn't appear to be too auspicious for TBH

Davy’s, in an announcement entitled We are proud to open our first Davy's Wine House, located in the heart of Holborn, wrote:Our ground floor shop & bar has over 200 wines from across the globe in the shop and tucked at the back is our tasting bar, with a full bank of Wine Enomatic machines, great music and simple food, where you can sample more than 30 fine wines. The basement holds our completely refurbished dining room, with a grill menu which changes monthly and uses the best quality ingredients. It has private and semi-private dining spaces for any event. The bar serves beautiful cocktails, has an extensive wine list and sharing boards.
Throughout the Wine House we have 7 state-of-the-art Enomatic machines, which allow you the opportunity to purchase fine wine by the glass or to taste before deciding which bottle suits you best. We offer 25ml, 125ml or 175ml measures to allow you the freedom to sample many, or enjoy just the one.
As a loyal customer of Davy's of Holborn, we would like to invite you to join us on our opening night, Friday 17th October 2014, from 4pm - 10pm. Please rsvp to our Events Manager, Katie via email or phone 0207 831 8365. Katie can also assist you with your Christmas enquiry or venue tour. You will certainly want to take a look, our dining spaces are perfect for any office party.
We look forward to welcoming you to Davy's Wine House, Holborn.
Kind regards
Joanna Martin

Is it ironic that the conversion to a “wine house” has made it harder for us to taste wines?

Playing Devil's advocate, should we choose a theme that enables more of the attendees to bring their own bottles? Even something like the very first Bunghole tasting (

My proposal has been rather confounded by a shortage of supply.
Please suggest a different theme.

If there is more flexibility in the theme, I have a few interesting bottles acquired recently from our local off licence (who now know to call me when they get anything interesting)! One could make its way to this tasting - if I have been granted table position 7, aka 'available'?!

Have you enough Croft to allow multiple folks to adopt?

OK. EHD have responded confirming retrieval can happen in time. I will hang back on instructions until we firm up on the theme, just in case I need to pull different bottles.

I'd like to stick to the Croft theme if we can. It appears that we're only short of a bottle for Ben with obvious vintages being 1975, 1985 or 1945.

Houston, we have a problem.
Katie Smith of Davy’s wrote:Good Morning Mr Wiseman,
Thank you for your email.
As requested I have checked availability on 29th October for you for your port tasting.
Unfortunately the whole of the restaurant area is booked for a quiz on that particular evening so we will not be able to hire out the semi-private rooms on that evening.
Apologies for not letting you know on the Friday evening when we spoke but I was unable to check the availability at the time for you. I am sorry about the inconvenience this may cause you.
Do you have an alternative date you would like me to reserve the area for? Or would you like me to contact our venue at Woolgate Exchange and Truckles and confirm if they have availability in their private rooms?
Once again I apologise for the inconvenience and please let me know if you have any further questions.

That was exactly my immediate thought. I would really like to keep the date if we can as my availability is pretty limited at the moment and opportunities to drink fine port in good company are limited at the moment.
We moved away from the Crusting Pipe when management there lost interest in looking after us. This latest message does not promise a great future...

Davy’s at St James’s: The Club room would be excellent for eight, but is booked. The office would be excellent for four, a squeeze for six, and definitely can’t hold eight of us.

I would suggest Truckles or Davy’s at Woolgate.
Alternatively, Davy’s at Plantation Place has several private rooms too.
Would any of these be suitable?
The Private Dining Room at
Plantation Place (

Narrow tables at
Truckles? Methinks not.

I have been to plantation place twice. Food acceptable and rooms ok. There is one upstairs that may be ideal for 7. On intro from TBH they were happy to allow me to bring port the first time. They are rarely busy evenings for food.

There is a fleeting outside chance that if a bid at Bonhams tomorrow is successful, and they can dispatch said case in short order, then a bottle of Croft 82 could be available. I don't mind if we need to double up on a vintage.
