Pale lemon yellow colour. Intense on the nose, full of brioche and lemon. Concentrated and dense on the palate with much of the intensity of a serious white wine. Long finish of good intensity. However, this lacks the freshness and balance I look for in a Champage - I preferred the NV shown alongside. 86/100.

Thank you for this. Telling that you preferred the NV. I think I might stick with what I've got and maybe get a few NV from one of the Christmas offers. I see Berrys has got one for Pol. I was rather more enthused by Nichols and Perks Bolly offer, which will almost certainly be over by the time I decide. Procrastination has saved me a fortune.

On reflection I recall that the 98 champagnes were widely twitted and for much the same reasons you describe. They became cheap by comparison to the 96s and have proved, for the most part, to be as good as the 96s. The only solution is to try one for myself.

Owen, I really hope that one day you will taste the petrol notes for yourself. It will surely be your Damascene moment.

Owen tastes the petrol notes every night, I think he's given that much away. It costs him 123.9p a litre.

It doesn't taste the same since they took the lead out of it. I'm ageing mine in old bourbon barrels to smooth it out. Hello Glenn, I didn't see you there!

Had a bottle this evening, Emma was very damming, giving it a similar tasting note to Alex has (hence my decision not to put it as a separate tasting note), she too said she preferred the NV and that the nose was OK but the palate was lumpy. And I agree with her. And Alex.

Had a lovely half of the NV this evening. Delicious.

Was this the regular, the Reserve, or the Sir Winston Churchill version?

DrDirk and me just having the Pol Roger 04 as an apperitive before comparing/enjoying other chmpagnes. Very disappointing for a vintage Pol! Too light, meager and short in the finish. Not sure if it will improve. I hope it does since I bought Mags from this as well.....
