BMHR and DJ declared an emergency this evening, BMHR being in Belfast with in-laws and DJ having just returned there from out-laws.

Thanks to Ben a local emergency was averted. Fillet steaks at L'Étoile were accompanied by the end of a Wine Society Port, which Santa thoughtfully left for us, a Cálem 85 and a Taylor 30YO (bottled 2007). The Cálem had some acid when decanted but came round beautifully; the T30YO was very soft, not in any way too woody - an excellent tawny. And the Wine Society port held its own too.

Glad we shone the bat torch tonight.

When I read about the emergency in Belfast I imagined you had been snowed in and were cut off the outside world. I was glad that the emergency was not of that kind. But I would think that with the wine in your cellar you could hold out pretty long if really cut off by snow.

André, if we were snowed in I think it would be rather fun! After all, we would have nothing else to drink but claret or port!

Yes, I can imagine that. But do you have enough pork pies cellared to keep you going? BTW: Can you put them in the freezer and thus eat them months after they were made? (I'm still learning about the English port pies. )

That is a very good question. I think pork pies can be frozen. I should bury some in the garden as the long frost sets in..!

A planned but not organised dinner with port. Two gentlemen of English descent dined in a French restaurant with 3 different ports. Turns out that Belfast is not bereft of port or fine steak!

The Wine Society port
I suspect this is their basic offering but was actually rather nice. Almost tawny like. Regrettably Santa had already enjoyed most of the bottle on Christmas Eve!

Calem 1985
A very good accompaniment to the fillet steaks. Note to self - pay more attention to Calem.

Taylor's 30 year old
Mrs Read was going to join us so this was for her but Daniel and I managed to deal with it in her absence! Very nice with the cheese.

The Vineyard
Worthy of recording is the port available for sale at this off licence on the Ormeau Road. It is well hidden though and some interesting bottles are not on show so ask!
