I was browsing through the Pathe News archive (as one does) and came across this footage of the 1953 harvest. I think this is Quinta de Roriz. Can anyone confirm this?

The chapel looks familiar but the vineyard looks steeper and more of a tight crucible than I remember seeing at Roriz.

Interesting that Pathe brought nice white costumes for the pickers to wear

It looks familiar as you've both stood outside it. Allow me to remind you about the Capela at Quinta St. Luiz

Well spotted, Andy.

From 0:56 to 1:00 the camera lingers on a large bunch of grapes. Are they rather water-swollen? Is that why ’53 wasn’t declared?

Separately, would it be worth writing to Pathe Archive suggesting that the description mention the specific quinta?
  • There are five main types of Port. Four are matured in wood, but the fifth, vintage, the wine of a specially good year, is usually matured in bottle after eighteen months or so in wood.
Name the four.

Colheita, garrafeira, tawny and...another one...TWAIOA?

If “garrafeira”, then LBV (which had been around for ages and which Taylor Fladgate were about to invent). And, neither more nor less than garrafeira, crusted.

In 1950s Britain I would suggest White, Ruby, Tawny, a multitude of non-regulated terms to describe aged tawny from either one or many vintages.

A separate discussion on Garrafeira split into a new thread by DRT.

This may be a trivial remark, but the music would drive me crazy if I had to hear for a whole day. BTW: Does anyone know what tunes are played today?

I have never seen dancing not heard music in the vineyards of the Douro during harvest. The only time that seems to happen is in the lagar at night when everyone is full of hooch.

I love these films; I've only had a chance to look at them now. I thought I could just see AHB and DRT offering expert advice to the steersman on the old Douro barque in this film.

If you look closely, you can also see Uncle Tom on one of the boats in the background. He's on the boat where they are drinking 1855 Unknown colheita that has never been refreshed...

Not Pathe this time, but the rather more prosaic YouTube but I came across a Ferreira short called The Luxury of Time that seems to have been made by the same people who made the Ne Oublie videos.

And here's the link to the Ne Oublie video for those who have not seen it.
