I usually have a glass or two in the evening, sometimes with a meal, often later at night. I tend not to drink a vast amount, though, as I don’t really like the feeling of being intoxicated on my own. I generally get a chance to enjoy a bottle with friends about once a month, which is, of course, a ...

There’s also a difference between pre- and post-2003 bottles when the IVP became the IVDP and the necessary extra words were squeezed onto the back. Also, it’s interesting that although the designs of some of Julian’s labels haven’t changed, the method of printing has: this would presumably give fur...

[offtopic] I’d didn’t realise that the Vau had such an attractive bottle design. (Though it’s a bit of a shame that they went for the cheap option of missing out the year from the screen print as that would allow them to loose the label on the front.) As the obviously have the technology, they could...

Congratulations, Ben! As I still have quite a lot of it left in the decanter, I hope you don’t mind me not opening anything new, and raising a glass of the Ramos Pinto 10 Year-Old Tawny. (Which might be enough to tip a theme towards wood-aged with KillerB’s Dow and your two colheitas). As I said on ...

It’s now “Buy 6 and save £44.40 (23.5%)† (about £23 a bottle). Serves me right for not ordering on the immediately (I was planning on going over the West End today so could have picked up a half-case in person). I’ll be interested to hear if they fulfil the orders that you made last night as the pr...

Gotcha. When you look at the "in bond" prices, the website tells you how many cases are available. Thanks. Incidentally, their out-of-bond numbers includes both bottles in their cellars at St. James’s and at their out-of-town warehouse. (I’d assumed it was the just the former). This makes...

I’d posted one at :ftlop: which is now in the TN Forum. It’s pleasant enough, though not great, and certainly worth getting at that price.

1997 Smith Woodhouse

Transposted from :ftlop: (with a typo correction) Extracted from the Virtual Tasting Room. Opened May 2008 As should be expected, the cork came out easily in one piece, and there was only a little sediment. 8+ Hours. Surprisingly large on the nose, but aromatic rather than powerful. Very fruity, wit...

Does anyone know what this was made out of? I presume they aren’t growing Touriga Nacional out in the Crimea? What looks like a current website suggests they aren’t producing anything fortified to Port-levels but includes lots of grape varieties which I’ve never heard of like: Ekim-Kara, Kethessia, ...

All being well, I should be able to make it, (in my newly financial-solvent state :)), but things are still a bit up in the air; I should have a better idea of what I’m doing in December in a month or so. I think I’d have to acquire/adopt som...

£115 a bottle is a touch on the expensive side, but at £105 a case, it’s almost worth exploring the finer points of the Trade Descriptions Act with their customer service :)

Founded in 1670, Warre's is the oldest British Port House and is owned by the Symington family, Port producers since the 19th century and who's ancestor made one of the first… Despite what KillerB might think, I have quite a lot of sympathy for people who make grammatical typos on forum threads. Re: JacobH’s unknown offence

I am also lightly questioning this use of the word “prime†. Surely the prime characters are those in “6′2″†, rather than the non-directional quotation marks? Fair enough: I have never been very good at remembering the names of those dubious ASCII legacy characters. However, neither is Unicode, wh...

Another day in any this has mellowed quite a bit. There’s still the tannic hit which I remember from the VP (I wonder why Tesco seems keen for their Ports to be blended in this way) but it’s an entirely acceptable Friday-night sipper.

Re: 2000 Fonseca LBV (unfiltered)

This was bottled in 2006. Having just finished an already open bottle of Taylors LBV (2002) the difference again asks the question - why filtered an LBV? The Fonseca is a drak red colour ( KillerB take note!) and easy on the nose without being too obvious. There is a fruitiness to it, without it be...

2001 Tesco (Symington) LBV This was another emergency purchase (I really need to get a stock of decent mid-range bottles). I suspect that you`re also a Mac user. If there´s a way for me to easily use an apostrophe rather than a prime via a Windows keyboard, I've yet to find it¡ 88) It’s actually much worse than that; I switched to Debian a few years ago (though one advantage is that it is very easy to set custom ...

[edit to remove an offending apostrophe…] I was too slow. But commendation for use of the ellipsis character (“…†), rather than three dots (“...†). Ermm? No. The best use for OWCs of any kind, apart from the obvious, is to use them as fuel on a garden fire. I like this Port a lot. As a moderately priced SQVP, I think it is a very solid bottle, especially as they seem to have produced enough of it for the Supermarkets to do these discounts.
