1940 Kopke Colheita (bottled 2020)

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Sample bottle filled 2020. 1940 was a very wet winter and spring but a very hot summer, with fires affecting some of the vineyards. Field blend. Presented side by side with the 1940 White Colheita.

Deep copper brown colour, 40% opaque. Huge nose of beeswax and pistachio paste. Lovely thick texture which is immediately followed by a huge wave of intense acidity. Incredible concentration, bringing flavours of orange and honey. Stunning palate, with an aftertaste that is more like a period for recovery. The mouth slowly recovers from its punishment, revealing layer after layer of orange and citrus with a background of muscvado sugar. Stunning length finish. This is an amazing wine which has become more intense than the last time I drank it 13 years ago. 95/100. Tasted 17-Jun-20.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
