1970 Morgan

Post by AHB » 08:29 Fri 01 Aug 2008

Part of a range of Morgan ports made available by Christie’s for buyers to taste prior to the fine wine sale of Thursday 16 November 2006.

Pale brown and lacklustre, lacking the sparkling clarity of the ’63 or the ’66, possibly slightly tainted on the nose? Slightly sweeter into the mouth than the ’63 and the ’66. Initial impact is weak but the flavours build well as you hold the wine in the mouth until it reaches a huge crescendo of aniseed. The aftertaste stays like an aniseed gobstopper filling the mouth and gripping it with flavoursome fire, fading away only slowly until all you are left with is tingling cheeks.

A slightly odd wine, huge in the mouth but empty on the nose. Possibly one to experiment with different decanter times to see if a bouquet will develop. 89/100.
Top Ports in 2018 (so far): Niepoort VV (1960's Bottling), Quinta do Noval Nacional 1994 and San Leonardo Very Old White (Bottled 2018)
2017 Ports of the year: Fonseca 1927 and Quinta do Noval 1927
