I've been watching winestilsoldout.com all day and didn't even see this. I *have* seen a number of wines come and go within minutes, though, so it doesn't surprise me that the 2005 Vargellas would disappear quickly.SushiNorth wrote:Coming up for sale on winestilsoldout.com: Taylor Fladgate Vargellas 2005. price $48.
Edit: What a joke. The "Best web price yesterday" is listed as $60. I am RIGHT NOW looking at someone else selling it for $33.
Edit: And... its gone. Was up for maybe 5 mins. Some people buy anything just because they like the idea of the event -- like the people who get too emotional and overbid at auctions.

I wrote a little piece of software that monitors webpages, it's currently watching theirs for the word "port" to appear.Glenn E. wrote:I've been watching winestilsoldout.com all day and didn't even see this. Re: Port for sale by retailer
I buy basic drinking Pinot and CS at ≈$20 a bottle from WTSO. Generally good value I find.
Never bought port from them though.

Re: Port for sale by retailer
I buy a lot of red wine from them, typically in the $12 to $20 range. On occasion I've gone as high as $45 - the 2006 Quinta do Crasto Old Vines Reserva, for example. I also find them to generally be a very good value, and I always check their price against wine-searcher.com before I order. Sometimes it looks like they're not the cheapest, but then when you factor in the free shipping they're easily the least expensive.jdaw1 wrote:I buy basic drinking Pinot and CS at ≈$20 a bottle from WTSO. I've only purchased Port from them... twice, I think. Might have only been once. One was a 4-pack of 1999 Quinta de Roriz that arrived in excellent condition - probably the best condition of any bottles I've ever ordered over the internet. Off the top of my head I can't remember what the other one might have been, or even for sure whether or not there was another one.

Re: Port for sale by retailer
I have a feeling we've discussed this before, though I can't find the thread. The words Port of the 1945 vintage seem to suggest that it's not a full Vintage, though I suppose it could quite easily be a Ruby or the equivalent of an LBV.jdaw1 wrote:1945 da Silva! Is ‘Five Crowns’ their Ruby?

Ask.com... ROFLMAO.
We've discussed (briefly) a similar bottle before: here.

Re: Port for sale by retailer
I was travelling through the Oxford area and found a chain of wine shops called S H Jones. They are lovely shops and I recommend that if you are in the area you pop in. They have a lovely port selection aswell as vintage champagne.
The ports I were interested in were:
Vesuvio 1994 - £64
Martinez 1994 - £36
Fonesca 1/2 1991 - £11
Any of these good prices? I can only find case prices on winesearcher.

the 91 guimarens is a fantastic price and well worth a case at that price.Alex M wrote:I was travelling through the Oxford area and found a chain of wine shops called S H Jones. In the states I paid 35 $ for hte full bottle 91 guimarens which would be £25 and I thought I had a great deal.

Their 97 was recently had for $16 in the US. I hesitate to think the 94 was that far exceptional to be worth 3-4x, but then again the pound is down.Alex M wrote: The ports I were interested in were:

Re: Port for sale by retailer
I have found that which claims to be the best port shop in France, Lavina, at 3 Boulevard de la Madeleine (near Place d’Opera), 75001 Paris, +33 1 42 97 20 20. Graham 1970! Except that they want €288 a bottle. Likewise Taylor 1963 for a mere €503. Nacional 1970 costs €994,80; and Fonseca 2000 at €295 a magnum or €153,25 a bottle.
Also two bottles of use for tastings: Fojo 1998 at €60,80; and Fojo 1996 at €56.
The shop assistant was most interesting. As with other cavists, he insists that the French neither understand nor drink good port. Indeed, Lavinia used to have more, but they’re not buying any, are selling their stocks gradually, and seem to intend not to replace any.
He took my card, and promised to give my details to any portheads who happen to visit.

Wow, that's not far from where my wife and I stayed on our anniversary trip 2 years ago. Our apartment was on the corner of Rue Sainte-Anne and Rue des Petits Champs if I'm remembering it correctly. Nice area! Is your new abode nearby?

Re: Port for sale by retailer
For complicated reasons, I’m not yet in the new abode (which is in the boondocks of the 19ème), instead staying at the belle-mère’s in the 1ère.
