1960 Warre Vintage Port

Post by jdaw1 » 21:59 Sat 11 Aug 2007

Four bottles of port were brought on holiday, for a Warre vertical with a friend and friends of his. My drinking chum fell ill, so the family decided to spread the vertical over several days, starting with the 1960, the oldest (presumably so the 1963 1977 1985 could age a bit more).

There will be photos of bottle, capsule, cork and wine, but only when I get back to my main computer, to which the camera can be connected. Subscribe to this thread to be notified thereof.

So, on Thursday 9th August 2007, at 14:30, the Warre 1960 was decanted through an unbleached coffee filter. Lightly damp under the capsule, and sticky, suggesting past and recent light leakage. A waiter’s corkscrew broke the cork near the end, though it was nicely damp throughout. A medium quantity of sediment, mostly remaining in the bottle.

D+0 hours: thin to the eye, dark pink more than red or brown. Nose predominantly alcohol, though some red fruit (Warre-like red fruit, whatever than might mean). Hot to taste, and very long, the heat lasting ages. Quite astringent.

D+4 hours: after an afternoon on the beach, the wife described it as “entirely mediocre†. She also said, to my puzzlement, that it had “the tartness of cranberries†. Still hot, too hot, and medium-long (shorter than at T+0), and less rich to taste than earlier. A sweet cloyingness stays long in the throat.

UncleTomScore = 5-4. Drink up!

Edit: the Warre 1963 was drunk on Sunday 12th August; the Warre 1977 on Wed 15 Aug 2007; the Warre 1985 on Fri 17 Aug 2007.
