2005 Osborne LBV

Post by JacobH » 00:25 Thu 03 Mar 2011

Colour-wise although a deep red, there is a surprisingly amount of lightening towards the rim (again, perhaps, suggesting that this is an LBV to be drunk young). Despite the driven cork, I’m therefore fairly certain this is filtered.

0+ On the nose attractive if not very much so. A gently gripping grapyness, like a young Vintage Port or a very good unfiltered LBV, predominates but fades quickly. It is followed by something slightly floral, although this is weak and distant.

In the mouth, I am immediately struck by the sugar which hits the roof of the mouth like a mouthful of ice-cream. However, it is followed by a certain amount of astringency, with some rough green tannins and short, slightly peppery aftertaste, all of which is quite disappointing. Unfortunately, there is no equivalent to the Vintage Port like nose and very little fruit.

Perhaps some more time in the decanter will improve this. I do hope so since, at the moment, it is not showing well.

This is my first experience with Osborne. I noticed that although they have nice bottles embossed with Osborne’s signature (and a rather fetching bull logo on the label) it is subtitled ‟Bottled by Quinta and Vineyard Bottlers” (the Taylor Fladgate company) rather like a own-brand supermarket bottle.

With some more decanting times, I don’t think this has improved. Mellowed somewhat in the mouth, but I don’t think I’d acquire another bottle.
