1994 Niepoort

Post by Chris Doty »

From a 375ml bottle, decanted (though a coffee filter and standard plastic funnel 4.5 hrs prior to service)

D+4.5

Showing heat consistent with the strength of this vintage and the rather short decanting period. Good purple fruits and floral characteristics, but the heat is coming through strongly

D+6

More integrated mouthfeel. Violets, anise, black licorice and dark plums. NOT a 'sweet' wine in its overall approach, but a complete wine, though still VERY young. Puckering finish.

Likely to be a very great port with time (though perhaps never to be one of the top 3 examples of this vintage).

88 points for drinking today, 92+ for potential. Have a handful of other half bottles, which I will revist in 8-10 years.
