NV Graham Crusted 1998

Post by LGTrotter » 01:04 Sat 20 Dec 2014

I was hoping to try a 2001 Crusted but somehow got the cork out of this one without noticing the vintage.

But this is very good, two good lengths clear of the Tesco 94 which is my other cellar defender. It has a slightly muted nose, but I am drinking it quite cool as I think it may get a bit top heavy and jammy if it gets too warm. There is fruit on the nose and something which reminds me of apple, very Graham. Dark and a good bright ruby at the centre. In the mouth it feels dense and sweet, but with enough tannin to map out the taste. The palate is well ordered, surprisingly muscular and long. My only query would be that it might come unseamed in a few years, but I doubt it.

88 and this may be a little grudging, just lovely right now.

Was this pop and pour Owen? I haven't quite worked out what kind of decant time is ideal for either this or the Tesco '94.

Yes, but my note was written about 3 hours later and so is a bit of an amalgam. However I didn't notice a big change in this time. I tend not to be too precious about decant times with cellar defenders. 'Bout 4 hours would be my guess.
