1995 Quinta do Vesuvio

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Brick red, just off opaque. Stewed rhubarb and strawberries on the nose. The stewed fruit leads on entry mixed with baked brambles. Good firm tannins on the mid palate with fruit and a good structure. Big on the aftertaste with delicious chewy fruit and a peppery blueberry paste length. Better than the previous bottle but still oddly baked in tone. 88/100. Drunk 21-Feb-17. Decanted ½ hour.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

This and your other note is what I consider typical of this vintage. IMO it's in a good place at the moment but for most Ports won't get any better. Despite some thinking this was a great vintage, I think time has shown that isn't the case. Though that doesn't mean these aren't very nice Ports at the moment...not all Ports can be legendary VP's.

I don't think this is ready for drinking. To me it seemed a little out of balance while still being enjoyable. It reminded me of how well the 1998 was drinking a couple of years ago while this was really closed.

Today the 1998 seems more closed than it was 2 years ago and the 1995 seems to be opening up, but still needs another year or two.
