1982 Smith Woodhouse LBV
Bottle matured, bottled 1986. Acquired ex-cellars in May 2012. A mature cherry red colour, 50% opaque. Sweet red cherries on the nose, with just a hint of cigar tobacco under the fruit. Gentle and soft texture; flavours are slow to resolve but develop very well into a slightly fierce rose and pepper combination that is very mouthfilling. Good levels of acidity support the palate and show as a fair amount of heat on the aftertaste before fading to allow a lingering tobacco, milk chocolate and dries cranberry finish to slowly fade away. Delicious LBV with plenty of life to come. 90/100. Opened 26-Apr-17 as part of a charity Port Tasting that I delivered. Decanted 1 day.
Top 2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
