2000 Cockburn
Deep cherry red, little bricking but none of the purple of youth; 90% opaque. A lovely nose of sweet black cherries, but cut with a delicious summer freshness and a touch of barbecue smoke - a really interesting nose. On the palate this is sweet and full of bramble jelly. There is a wonderful elegance to the acidity that stops the bramble from being cloying and highlights some of the peppery basil on the late palate. The gentle tannins show on the cocoa aftertaste before the heat jumps in to warm up the sour cherry and cranberry finish. A delicious port, balanced and elegant despite its relative youth. 90/100. 28-Jul-17. Decanted 24 hours.
Top 2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
