1970 Croft

Oporto bottled, a bottle from a case which produced several leakers. This bottle was down to a mid-shoulder fill, the seepage appearing to have been caused by the failure of the cork to settle properly in the angled neck.

Burnished redwood colour, quite light in tone; 30% opaque. Oxidised nose, flattened with sour cherry and fibre-glass resin. Neutral entry, little by way of flavour at first. The mid-palate shows some brown sugar and red apple flavour, with some heat from the unknit alcohol. Quite a lot of acidity shows on the aftertaste, which is surprisingly thick in texture and full of smooth honey. Honey and lime lingers on the aftertaste. Not a good bottle of what can be a great port. 79/100. Drunk 29-Oct-17. Decanted 1 hour.
Top 2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

2026: Quinta das Carvalhas 80YO Tawny
