We need some tastings in the diary
We need some tastings in the diary
Folks, not much in the diary after Jan 18 this year until May. Any ideas for some themes? Personally I'd like to do a Warre, Croft or Smith Woodhouse vertical. We could even have all three - one a month for Feb, March and April!
Any thoughts from others about themes, in advance of trying to find some dates?

Re: We need some tastings in the diary
Depending how full a vertical you are considering, you might ideally need more time to organise. From a personal standpoint, I would love to attend a significant Warre vertical, though there would be some uncertainty for the next couple of months so if it were to happen I would selfishly prefer it to be later in the year, to perhaps give me a higher chance to attend.

Croft or Warre sound good to me, but I take Phil's point re time to organise.
How about anther SQVP tasting or non TPF and Symington

A potential theme/request from me...
The first of my knee replacements has gone very well. Only four weeks in I can stand on that leg without wincing, and have walked 10km in each of the last 14 days.
The other knee will hopefully be done within the next four weeks and by spring I could be ready to enter Strictly Come Dancing.
All going well I would like to celebrate my renewed agility with my Port chums.
Bring a bottle to share with Derek's new knees would be the theme

That’s excellent.

Works for me. Alas no shipper obviously rhymes with ‘joelho’.

That really is excellent, great to hear; hoping the other will go as smoothly too. I'm still not going to watch Strictly though, I'll have to ask the neighbour how you're doing, but certainly hope to celebrate with Port at some stage.

There’s also a new subject of her majesty we need to welcome with Port fit for a Queen(‘s subject).

Re: We need some tastings in the diary
Fabulous - it seems we have plenty of reasons to assemble with much port!
Phil - no problem to hang back on a Warre vertical. We'll keep that one on hold and reconsider dates later in the year.
Derek - great news on the knee success and long may the progress continue!
So how about this:
Feb - Port fit for a Queen's subject (with a date to be determined that is good for said subject)
Mar - SQVP or mature LBV
Apr - Bring a bottle to share with Derek's new Knees
I'll pick some dates and get the ball rolling.

Excellent plan. Good thinking.
Re: We need some tastings in the diary
After Phils Calem vertical - We mentioned pencilling in some future dates for mini verticals of some of the less well known producers. We discussed Rebello Valente / Kopke / Krohn and a few others (I can also add Messias).
Can I suggest that we pencil in a few over a 6-24 month timeframe. This will give us sufficient time to acquire and squirrel a few away.

With regards to the Port fit for a Queen's new subject tasting what about Tuesday the 13th of February? I have the citizenship ceremony on Monday the 12th so that date could fit nicely.

I'm quite intrigued by the mature LBV theme. Great idea!flash_uk wrote: ↑15:19 Thu 11 Jan 2018 Fabulous - it seems we have plenty of reasons to assemble with much port!

Re: We need some tastings in the diary
Given the theme, perhaps similar yet slightly different "pairs" of bottles would be appropriate?
There are several ways I can think of immediately as possibilities, such as:
- vintage/vintage from same shipper and year with different blends (e.g. T/TV, TTF/TV, Ca/CaF, N/NN, V/VC, Ck/CkC, ...)
- vintage/vintage from same shipper and year from different bottlings
- vintage/lbv from same shipper and year (e.g. WC84/W84(lbv) ...)
- vintage/colheita from same shipper and year (e.g. Bu63/Bu63(c) ...)

Re: We need some tastings in the diary
For the Christmas triple event week, how about an Offley vertical for this year, and possibly a '94@25 next year?

Re: We need some tastings in the diary
I would be interested in a vertical of Offley, not a wine I see very often but one I enjoy drinking when I do see it. I have very little so would probably need to adopt a bottle unless, by some fluke, one of the bottles I did have filled a gap in the line-up.
A '94 horizontal next year is another excellent thought. I really enjoy the '94 vintage today but they still have a long way to go before they hit their peak. I have a fair range including a small number of unusual shippers such as Broadbent.

Re: We need some tastings in the diary
I have 17 vintages of Offley available, ranging from 1910 to 1985. We would probably need to go ex cellars to get the recent vintages, as there appears to have been a fifteen year gap in the UK distribution of Offley. Now eighteen years old, is it time to start including the 2000 vintage in the verticals?

Re: We need some tastings in the diary
I too would be interested in an Offley vertical although my preference would still be for a SW vertical which was one of the shippers we floated at the Calem vertical. Of course, a SW vertical would mean tracking down one of the near mythical 63s and I suspect (given the number Tom has anyway) that a more expansive vertical for Offley is likely to be easier than for SW.

Re: We need some tastings in the diary
In 2016 Oscar Quevedo released a small number of "Closure Experiment" 4 bottle packs of the 2014 vintage.
Would anyone be interested in trying a 4 pack at some point this year to see whether there is any discernible difference between them yet? Of course, we would almost certainly have to have some other ports to compare and contrast to the youthful and exuberant Quevedo 2014...

Re: We need some tastings in the diary
I am in the unexpected scenario of knowing that I'll be free for a tasting on Mon, Tue or Wed 2-4th July. My other half is away at a conference and I'll be idle in the UK between contracts. Any interest in a tasting then and any themes needing a home?
