Tue 5th June - Vintage with an '8' theme.

Post by forest26 »

Boot & Flogger
Suggestion: Following the theme of revisiting vintages on anniversary years, it gets a little harder with the 8's. Can I propose that we cast the net wider than usual and include anything with an '8' in the vintage. Happy to modify after feedback.

I have a bottle with three eights in the vintage. Would that be of interest? :D

Put me in the tentative list. It'll prob be a couple months before I know or not if I can get over the pond. But I've not been there in some time and this would be a good excuse too.

Tony - let me know if you're happy for me to edit your first post, or feel free to copy and paste what I've put below.

People who have responded are:
  1. TC
  2. SCD
  3. MPM
  4. CPR
  5. IDJ
  6. DRL
  7. AHB
  8. DRT (who has a bottle with three 8's in the vintage)
  9. ADV (tentative)
  10. RLC
I note that JDAW has not yet responded! We should certainly hold a place for him, just in case he wants to be there.

I'd also like to invite John Ireland to join us as our guest (and therefore sharing his costs amongst us, although I will provide his bottle). Rumour has it that John is 50 next year and given the support we have from Seckfords and from John in particular, I think it would be nice to thank him by giving him a seat at the table. Unless anyone objects, I'll add him (and Julian) to the attendees list in due course as tentatives so we ensure there are seats at the table for both of them.

First post updated with the list of attendees, including JDAW and John Ireland.

As a bit of lobbying for when you refine the theme, I'd like to do this tasting either wholly blind so no-one knows what we are tasting (I have some black sleeve bags we could use) or wholly sighted.

Alternatively it could also be done as a slightly more structured theme where attendees drop you a PM to offer a selection of bottles which meet the theme and you choose which one appears at the event. That way you are able to ensure there are no accidental duplicates or that we don't end up with 14 bottles of 1998 Senhora da Ribeira. (If you would like me to do the coordination, I'd be happy to volunteer.)

Sadly, for family reasons John Ireland is not able to commit to attend a tasting in June this early in the year. He has graciously thanked us for the invitation but has declined.

It may be worth asking again a couple of weeks before the event, if there is still a seat free.

I can start to put this together.

Perhaps we can firm up the theme on the 18th - if anyone not attending the 82 tasting has a view on the format/theme please make your thoughts known.

Vintage with an '8' theme.

Post by forest26 »

OK B&F Now booked for the 5th June

Some comments on the theme would be useful.
either:
a) we try and construct a vertical of examples from years ending with an '8'
b) we go for a 'blind' bring a bottle with an 8 in the vintage as suggested by Alex.

Please confirm availability for the evening and your preference on theme.

5th June is good for me.

For the theme I agree it should blind bottles ending with an 8 in the vintage with an exception made for any port from the 19th century.

So the theme effectively becomes one of A Port From 18XX, 1908, 1938, 1948, 1958, 1968, 1978, 1988, 1998, 2008.

I strongly suspect that either people will struggle to meet the theme requirements or we will end up with a lot of port from 1998 and 1988 - personally I'd rather drink port from the other 1980 vintages than port from these two years.

How about a slight variation so as not to disadvantage people with less deep cellars? How about "Port With An Eight" but the vintage has to be pre-declared and no duplication of vintages is permitted?

Or how about "Port With An Eight and At Least 50 Years Old"?

Or go back to the variation that I tried last summer for the Port Forum anniversary and go for a vertical of eights: 2008, 1998, 1988, 1978, 1968, 1958, 1948, 1938, 1908, 1899, 1898, 1897, 1896...

Personally speaking... I like the purity of the theme 2008, 1998, 1988, 1978, 1968, 1958, 1948, 1938, 1908, 1899, 1898, 1897, 1896... (which was the original intention). I can fill most of the years if necessary (except 1908)

68 - S, Fg
58 - W, Mz, Gm
48 - T, F, G
38 - only Tawny
18 - possibly?
08 - none
18xx some

Excellent. My bottle with three 8's in the vintage is already at the B&F along with a modest but very drinkable back-up.
