2016 Taylor

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Transparent centre to the wine, in contrast to the Symington wines. Fragrant nose with generous sweet fruit. A wine which is poised on entry, with intense black licorice dominating the huge levels of acidity and a wonderful underlying cedar wood essence. The fruit overwhelms the tannins, but there are there lurking in ghostly form. The palate has a great elegance to it. A hint of strawberries on the aftertaste, then a long black licorice and purple blackcurrant finish of amazing length. This is very fine port with sweet fruit wrapped together in a manner which makes this port glorious and elegant - and oh so refined! 93-95.

Tasted 12 September 2018.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

T16 Med/deep ruby red with a purple rim. Beautiful nose. Lots of sweet red fruit, prunes and and blackberries. Smooth, rich and sweet but with good balanced acidity and tannin. Wonderful finish that fills the palate and lives long. This port got better and better as the night went on and a small sample kept to try a few days later showed that a very strong tannic backbone had come through indicating wonderful ageing potential. Initially 94 points but as it improved so much over time...

75% opacity, dark ruby red. Wonderfully fragrant nose, strawberry, raspberry, cherry, lychee. Soft and smooth, tannins medium level and soft, fruit is rich - strawberry and raspberry. Acidity low-medium. Not a typical Taylor style at all I thought! Elegance rather than power.
