New York, June LBV-Cancelled

Post by jfacciol »

As we have had one snazzy New York port tasting in Feb and another scheduled for March, I am proposing a down market tasting for April, specifically a LBV tasting. I have a nice range of LBVs. the oldest being Warre and Smith Woodhouse 1984.

I am sure that other folks have LBVs.

I wonder if there is any interest in doing such a tasting.

I would be happy to volunteer my home again.

I think this could be a very interesting tasting, especially since I haven't had much of a chance to taste many older LBV's. It would also be nice to try filtered aginst unfiltered. Here are the LBV's I currently have on hand:

Warre 1994
Rozes 1994
Sao Pedro 1997
Qta do Castelinho 1997
Pocas 1998
Fonseca & Van Zeller 2000
Qta da Peca 2000
Qta da Santa Eufemia 2000
Fonseca Unfiltered LBV 2001
Niepoort 2001
Qta do Javali 2001

I am in awe of what Eric has. I have not even heard of half of the port houses, much less tried their ports.

Eric, are these the result of your trips to Newark?

Yes Jay, a lot of them did come from Newark and it's environs. I tend to pick up oddball LBV's out of curiousity whenever I see them. The Qta do Javali I picked up at AVEPOD in Oporto on Roy's Harvest Tour. I do not know of it's availability in the U.S. but I've never seen it for sale around here, so that would be a nice one to contribute to the tasting, I think.

My April calendar is happily uncluttered.

I own no LBVs (which might be a matter of shame or of pride), but assuming that somebody would be willing to allow me to adopt, would be willing to play. Dates? My April calendar is happily uncluttered.

Jay: are you willing to post (a subset of) your collection of LBVs, so that thse knowledgeable—not me—can recommend a coherent tasting?

Smith Woodhouse 1984
Warre 1984
Van Zellers 1985 (I think)
Warre 1986
Ramos Pinto 1989
Churchill 1990
Offley 1990
Ferreira 1991
Graham 1991
Niepoort 1992
Osborne 1994
Ramos Pinto 1994
Osborne 1997
Osborne 1999
Osborne 2000
Quinta do Infantado 2000

A couple of thoughts occur to me on the line up. The first LBV tasting should probably be all different houses to give those who have not tried
LBVs a chance to taste generally. If there is interest in LBVs, we could actually have one or two verticals in the next year. (What a strange thought!!)

Eric has already suggested a rare LBV from his collection. I would suggest (to show LBVs at their best) the Smith Woodhouse 1984 and Niepoort 1992 from mine. Jeff (if he can come and can find it) could bring the Warre 1982. That's four bottles, which is the number so far indicating interest.

We could add bottles as and if additional folks express interest, either from the collections of the additional attendees or from mine or Eric's collections.

I would also suggest a Friday or Saturday so that the most folks can come. I am free most of these days in April other than the 11th and 12th.

Delay until June?

Post by jfacciol »

I know that there will be various sotto voce comments, but I would like to delay this event. I just don't have the "stamina" to have a port tasting more than once every four weeks and so. With the O&O tasting coming up on May 8 and the 1977 tasting having occurred on March 29, my liver can't take any more

My proposal would be to put this off until mid-June, if that works for folks. And then I, at least, am done with Port for a couple of months in the States, at least.

We can delay the LBV until June: no problem.

Post by jdaw1 »

We can delay the LBV until June: no problem. And without “sotto voce comments†. (Though please re-title the thread.)

There might have to be a short-notice ‘emergency’ tasting in April, but that can be arranged separately.

No June LBV Tasting

Post by jfacciol »

The June LBV tasting has become the May 8 LBV tasting, hence this thread is now defunct.
