1963 Dow

Post by winesecretary »

Bottled by Carl Jacobsen of Copenhagen. Its remarkable youth (I surmise excellent bottling and cold storage) was both pleasurable and misleading (more so for this taster, I was decades out, everyone else at least thought it was a 1970). An astonishingly fruity, spicy bottle. And delicious. Nowhere near fading. Somehow this was the first of my glasses to empty itself. Consumed with AHB, CPR, THRA, and guest OJW on 07/10/19 at the B&F.

A mature copper-red colour, 50% opaque. Slightly harsh on the nose but with mature fruit undertones. Smooth and balanced entry with lots of red jelly flavours. Fresh acidity and a hint of tobacco bring life to the palate, but this is a little one-dimensional with the sweetness being slightly too much for the acidity but a nice fragrance develops with patience, highlighted by the tannins still in the wine. The aftertaste is a little hot with the alcohol showing before a sticky sweet red reduction finish. 91/100. Decanted 22 hours!

Tasted as part of a Bring a Bottle tasting at the Boot & Flogger.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
