1997 Gould Campbell

Post by rich_n »

An informal pre-Christmas tasting of ports with the theme "A bottle of port which cost you less than £25", as suggested by winesecretary and organised (with plenty of help from others) by richn.

Not a load of fruit the nose or the palate, eucalyptus and savoury flavours coming through. Quite tart. Medium pepper heat. Good.

Young, 80% opaque, red rimmed wine. Not hugely fruity, but quite spicy. Good.

Deep red colour with a medium rim; dark but not youthful. Powerful and astringent nose, full of fruit albeit slightly aggressive. Lots of fruit on the palate, smooth but with delicious sweet strawberry, slightly jammy.A wonderful structure with generous tannins and acidity. Delicious sweet fruit on the aftertaste, youthful and smooth finish with a wonderful persistence of red liquorice. Served blind, this was guessed to be Quinta do Seixo 2013.
90/100. Tasted 17-Dec-19. Decanted 12 hours.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

70% opacity, deep dark red, purple rim. Rich chocolate nose. Light to mid tannins, unripe fruits, some acidity and bitterness in the finish.
