A 1970 horizontal, Flight 5, Thurs 8 October 2020

Post by flash_uk »

The 1970 vintage is 50 years old this year. Birthday celebrations are required.

What: 1970, Flight 5
When: Thurs 8 October 2020
Where: The Red Room, The Boot & Flogger (Google maps)
Timing: 18:00 for 18:30

Please note: preference for attendance will be given to people who are able to provide bottles from Tier 3. Which means some of those currently in places 1-14 might get bumped because someone in reserve has a bottle to offer.
Also, depending on our ability to collectively source the bottles across all tiers, it might happen that the Thursday is cancelled, because we don't collect enough bottles to make it worthwhile, in which case we'll squeeze what we have into Friday.

I confirm I should like to attend, subject to an inadequate number of those further up the primary list also wishing to attend.

Confirmed...but accept I will most likely be replaced as I am unlikely to have a bottle to offer for this part of the tasting.

Confirmed, subject to being able to provide a tier 3 bottle.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

This is going to be a challenge to put this together - the saving grace is that it will only need to be one bottle.

At the moment from Tier 3 - I have Royal Oporto, Dalva, Santos Junior and Borges. I'll put them aside as I suspect they will be adopted. I'll keep an eye out for any others.

I have Hutchison and Barros of the tier 3 Ports. Mike, would it be helpful to paste the list of the tier 3 Ports into the top of this thread so that we can more readily view?

Thanks Ian. Have added a link in the top post to get to the list of shippers in tiers.

Looking for something else on t'Internet and came across this...

https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auct ... 19010a65bd

Looks like another 1970 that it's unlikely we'll be able to find.

Was this missed from the original list or is it something else?

Interesting find! Indeed looks like another one for the list, but nobody has it. Also noticed that one was on offer at Cheffin's in December as well.

It might or might not be, you never know in Porto. It is the same company- but to know if it is the same juice inside the bottle you have to ask a port wine expert.

This Tier 3 tasting has proved popular so I've extended the places from 14 to 17 to give a few more people a chance to attend. We will use 40ml pours instead of 50ml - which will hopefully make the following day slightly easier ;-)

Simon, Dia - apologies have not been able to fit you in as I needed to give priority to people bringing (some quite rare) bottles.

Top post updated with an indication of who I hope can bring what.

As with the Friday tasting:
- I am assuming everyone is having dinner, please advise if you don't want dinner
- I will operate a money clearing system for the whole tasting, which means that I will work out the cost for each person for the port plus dinner and tips, and will ask for payment up front. Some people are very generously contributing a hefty number of bottles and will be receiving cash rather than paying it!
- the bottles will be costed at £90 per bottle
- I will slightly overestimate the costs in case one or two folks need to drop out, and consequently I expect that there might be a small repayment of up to £10 per person once all of the actual costs are known and taken care of

Hello everyone. Probably self-evident, but our plans for the 1970 Mega Horizontal are on hold pending some more certainty about how we could conduct such an event in the current COVID times. I'll reactivate this thread in 2021 at a point when we have better news!

Personally, as a child of 1970, I am now subscribing to the theory that 2020 is year 49b - and the way it is going, 2021 will be 49c!
And in March this year it will be 49d by the look of it!

When this is rescheduled (possibly for 2025 or 2030?) I can add Cabral 1970 to the Tier 3 selection. I suspect this won't be particularly good, but needs to be included in our pursuit of completeness.
