2021 Virtual Tasting #5 - Thurs 11th March - Crusted etc

Post by nac »

Do we still want this if also doing the following Thursday?
The answer would appear to be “yes”.

If so, any theme suggestions?
Crusted has been suggested.

Theme is Crusted. If you don't have any, then feel free to drink something else!

Yes please, can I suggest we bring forward "crusted" theme if we get the numbers to make that worthwhile?

Yes please. I may struggle with the Crusted theme unless we might be permitted to open an old Vintage Character Port which is basically the same as a crusted...
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

My choice for tonight is a Fonseca Crusted Port - bottled 2007. My first ever Crusted purchase - specifically for this event.
Decanted at 1600. Was quite surprised to find it had a driven cork (which was completely unbranded).

Neil, likewise I'm trying my first crusted port bought in November, Dow's bottled 2012.

Work has got the better of my I'm afraid so will struggle to make it on tonight. Perhaps I can make it towards the end - we'll see. Please do post notes on the stuff you try!

Having no crusted in London (I was sure I had packed some on my last trip home but no) I shall instead consume some 20 year old Taylor Tawny, bottled 1982 for a Mr Brian Howard, and imported by Alexander Dunn. Bought at auction some point in the last few years. It has thrown a sediment and has required decanting. A crust of sorts.

Does this imply a new date has now been set for the postponed Churchill tasting?

@jdaw1 & PhilW - As I recall from last week's happy-making zoom call (albeit memory may be affected somewhat, somehow), there is a Churchill Port Club (hereafter "CPC") tasting tomorrow. Not connected to the previously planned TPF Churchill tasting, which has been delayed sine die. I am not a member of CPC (although possibly I ought to be).

Those who were on the Crusted etc. call - the 20 year old Taylor bottled 1982 which I consigned to the scrapheap has come round somewhat after several days of air. It is still not good port (and, is not as good as most recently-bottled 20 year olds I have drunk in the past five years) but it is drinkable.
