1979 Graham Malvedos

Post by nac »

First of four bottles from WineOwners in March 2023.

Base of neck. Some evidence of old seepage, but seems OK now?

Popped, decanted, poured. Fairly solid, heavy sediment.

Bright and clear; a lovely pale red; no brown hints.

Very pleasant, undeveloped nose. Still some almost primary fruit. Quite perfumed. Maybe strawberry jam.

More developed in the mouth, but not overly. The freshness from the nose carries forward. Still some cooked fruit, but also richer tones - almost savoury. However, the balance isn't quite right. Still some tannin and acidity but not in harmony. Medium length.

Nice, but nothing to get overly excited about. Probably better than I was anticipating. Drink soon.

That sounds like a very well cellared bottle. My experience with this wine is that it's very pleasant, but fully mature. I agree that it's one to drink sooner rather than later.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

I wonder if the seepage was very early on, pre-release?

I assume it wasn't released to the market until late 80s or early 90s?

Has been Vac-U-Vined, so not really expecting much development...

Very similar to yesterday. Only difference is more noticeable alcohol on nose.

Will cork, but not pump the remains tonight to see if it makes a difference.

No obvious further change, so think this is now done, as is the bottle.
