1966 Fonseca

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Fonseca 1966, bottled by Matthew Gloag. Opened at 17.30, decanted at 18.30, tasted at 20.00. A wonderful mature brick red colour, 80% opaque. Magnificent on the nose, bringing sweet red cherry and generous Christmas spices. The flavours explode on the palate, the spices on the fruit are incredible - so rich and vibrant. The fruit is deep and brooding, full of flavour and masking aniseed, dark chocolate and delicious tannins. The tannins and chocolate blossom on the aftertaste, lead to aniseed and black cherry. Such a big, rich, fruit-laden and wonderful wine. A magnificent Port; very few are better. 98/100. Drunk 11-Feb-23. Decanted 1½ hours.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
