Cliff decided that we needed a Celebration of 1955, and volunteered many many bottles. Harry organised. Others were grateful. It started at lunchtime, on Tuesday 13th June 2023, at the Boot & Flogger.
Oporto bottled, in a pote bottle. A wonderful warm glowing polished mahogany in colour, 40% opaque. Dried vine fruit on the nose, with dates and a little lemon - the whole impression being of a complex and inviting wine. A delightful and thickened texture; honey on the palate with a generous citrus zest, milk chocolate and coffee. A little heat on the aftertaste, lots of spearmint which manages the miraculous trick of slowly fading to become a muscvado and lemon juice finish. Big and impressive Port. Second best Wine of the Lunch. 93/100. Tasted 13-Jun-23. Decanted 14 hours.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
