Quinta Das Carvalhas

Post by rich_n »

I was helping a friend with a birthday gift and came across a 10-40 yo tawny tasting selection on the VWP site from a producer called Quinta Das Carvalhas. From a quick perusal of the tasting notes I'm unclear if they're part of Royal Oporto or independent and I can't see anything on their NV tawny wines in there. Has anyone tried any of these wines, and if so what are your opinions?

They belong to the same people - Real Companhia Velha. I personally rate Carvalhas higher than Royal Oporto, but it has significantly less penetration in the British market (if any at all, which might be part of their commercial strategy).

It's a fantastic estate, by the way. Across the river from Croft's Quinta da Roêda, in Pinhão.

I'm aware that VWP have been getting some more "lesser known" brands in and I'm not opposed to trying them! I'm just interested in what people think of them so it's good to know you are at least somewhat impressed.

RCV makes some lovely tawnys. Their VP’s are getting better and their table wine program is excellent.

I’m another fan of the Carvalhas tawnies (including the colheitas). Your friend won’t be disappointed if they decide to get the tasting pack.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
