For a bit of fun, I thought that for my next little jaunt I might leave the car at home and put my faith in the railways (and Ryanair)
Does anyone have any idea how often the trains run up the Douro valley, and how long the journey takes?
The only Portuguese train times site I can find does not acknowledge the existence of Pinhao..

Train map mentioning Pinhão
Train map mentioning Pinhão, reached via dmoz then cp.pt.
Searching cp.pt for a station seems to get within a click or few of a page for that station.
Timetables: Porto/ Amarante/ Vila Real / Mirandela; Porto/ Régua / Pocinho. (Which don’t mention Pinhão: odd.)

I believe the journey from Porto to Pinhao is about 2.5 / 3 hours. Never took it that far, but I did take the train from Pinhao to Regua and from Pinhao to Vargellas (then walked from there to Vesuvio and took the train back).
It's beautiful to take the train, and it takes you through some of the most rugged parts in the Upper Douro.

The website Jdaw found is the best source of information. If you search it you will find an English language version.
There are 2 train stations in Oporto and two types of train: roughly translated to National and Regional. I think direct trains from Oporto to Pinhao are rare, 1 or 2 per day, and most journeys will require a change at Regua from a national to a Regional train, Regua is around 2 hours from Oporto.
I found the best way is to take a train to Regua, which leave every half hour to an hour from one or other of the Oporto stations and then get a taxi to Pinhao, which takes about 25 minutes. Your First Class ticket to Regua will cost about 11 Euro and the taxi to Pinhao about 20 Euro.
Once at Pinhao you can reach many of the Quintas in 10 to 15 minutes by taxi or the farther away Quintas by train or boat.
