Christmas present Port

I have noticed that I receive fewer bottles of Port and wine as Christmas gifts than I used to - either people are bored buying me wine or other people are starting to think I have too many bottles.

I did receive two bottles this yar, and what a contrast there was between their styles. One was a bottle of Marks & Spencer 2018 LBV (from Fladgate) and the other a bottle of Krohn White Colheita 1964.

Anyone else receive Port as Christmas gifts?

Alas, no. I think most people in my life either haven't yet realised that wine is a nice gift they can get me or feel intimidated and are afraid to give me the 'wrong' wine (whatever that is).

Unfortunately, I have never received a bottle of Port for Christmas, although I did receive a Durand (Port version) as a gift this year from my kids (my suggestion). I think my family would be too afraid to buy a bottle of Port as a present for fear it might be a poor bottle. None of them know a lick about Port because it's pretty much a singular obsession.

I agree, George. I couldn't bring myself to spend that kind of money on a corkscrew for myself, but I figured split between 3 kids and making it easier for them all to get me something I really wanted, it was a win all the way around.

Don’t think I’ve ever received Port as a Christmas, Birthday, or other present.

Indeed now rarely get given any sort of wine at all, despite some heavy prompting about “needing” a case of Latour 1970….

I believe that this is my problem as well. Few of my friends know Port at all, let alone as well as I do, and so they don't want to "mess up" and give me something that they think I will feel is "unworthy" or whatever.

I, of course, would love anything that they gave me, and have on those few occasions when someone has gifted me a bottle. After all it really is the thought that matters!

Yesterday I was given a late Xmas gift of a bottle of Quevedo Ruby Port. Not something I would normally buy for myself.

The friends who gave me the gift were at our house for dinner, so I opened the bottle towards the end of the meal.

Oh my goodness! I am so glad they gave it to me. I wouldn’t normally buy or drink Ruby Port and this was just so rich and so smooth.

So kudos to them for having the courage to buy me Port and for giving me the chance to try something I wouldn’t normally get to taste.

I absolutely love it when a friend or acquaintance takes me out of my comfort zone like this ....

Normally this applies to music but it also works for port ... food .... cars .... opera and even Madeira Wine .....

With out these accurancies we never learn ... And I for one am not too old to learn ....
