2000 Smith Woodhouse

Post by jdaw1 »

As organised by George G., on Monday 10th February 2025, Some of the usual folks gathered in the Boot & Flogger, for a horizontal of 2000s.

Woe betide! What has become of us‽ A horizontal of Port from this century. Yes yes, the world has other disasters afoot, but this disaster is afoot here: what has become of us‽

SW00. red, 60% opaque — not the usual colour for this vintage. Red fruit (rather than the ’00s’ usual black fruit), white-pepper spice, mid weight. Very good Port. Also very different — an oddity of the vintage.

Nose has quite a bit of warmth. Palate is a bit hot. Licorice and pastis. Not super-exciting.

Not as dark in colour as the GC00 tasted alongside, but dasker than the QH00 or Sainsbury Taste the Difference 2000 VP. Bright on the nose, full of fruit. Nicely balanced entry, but dominated by the acidity disrupting the balance and harmony of the wine. Menthol and spirit makes the aftertaste uncomfortably warm, but the black fruit gum finishes well. 89/100
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
