1977 Niepoort

Post by jdaw1 »

An emergency was declared for Monday 14th April 2025, at the Boot & Flogger.

A 1977 was proffered, so another was, so another was, and the planning attracted towards an evening of 1977s. This is good.

A well stored bottle acquired 2024. Decanted 0715 into screw top bottle. Short cork in good condition. Lovely floral fragrance during decanting. Good colour. A decent amount of fine sediment which happily did not appear until the last two tablespoons of port.

Lighter end of the spectrum. Ravishing floral nose. Palate, happily, congruent. Effortlessly drinkable (and drunk). Deserves its fine reputation on this showing. Fourth on the night against strong competition.

Niepoort 1977. Bordeaux bottle. The most mature and developed of the wines being tasted this evening. Brick red, 30% opaque. Sweet, hints of orange blossom honey. Exquisite texture on the palate; Dead Nettle nectar, fabulous mature fruit. Stunning mature, spiced and honeyed fruit on the aftertaste and finish. Really, really very good. 95/100.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
