1970 Horizontal, flight 0, Thursday 2 October 2025

Post by flash_uk »

The 1970 vintage is 55 years old this year. Birthday celebrations are required.

I have finally got round to rescheduling the mega 1970 horizontal which was originally planned for 2020.

What: 1970, Flight 0
When: Thurs 2 October 2025
Where: The Ovens, The Boot & Flogger (Google maps)
Timing: 18:00

Flight 0 is for any 1970 ports not present in flights 1-4 on the following day.

Bottle delivery status can be viewed here.

Bottle pictures can be viewed here.

Please note: preference for attendance will be given to people who are able to provide bottles for the flight. Which means some of those currently in places 1-20 might get bumped because someone in reserve has a bottle to offer.

Attendees:(bold=reconfirmed)
  1. MPM
  2. JDAW
  3. GEAG
  4. NAC
  5. PW
  6. TC
  7. IDJ
  8. CPR
  9. MC
  10. AHB
  11. HTWH
  12. THRA
  13. Jörgen
  14. Sten
  15. Stefan
  16. MSC
  17. CEM
  18. JMK
  19. BMHR
  20. Reserved
Reserves:
  1. SCD (now unable to make it)
  2. AP (unable to make it)
  3. SCD (moved up to attendees)
  4. DG (unable to make it)
  5. Ralph (unable to make date)
  6. BMHR (moved up to attendees)

Please also read the post directly following this one, where further details are provided.

Picking up from where things were, some updates:
  • I know of one person originally able to attend, who is now unable to attend
  • in the intervening 5 years, a number of people have been very generous towards me, sharing some excellent port and wine. I am reserving 4 seats for these people and will extend an invite to them. Should any of these folks prove to be unable to attend, the seat(s) will be released for reserves
  • given that we will have much work to do the following day, I am extending this tasting to 20 people, which means we'll have 35ml pours
The net result of all of this is reflected in the revised list of attendees and reserves.

Could I ask that everyone in attendees and reserves reconfirm their availability for the new date.

Some further details for the event.

Payment will be in advance for dinner/tips/corkage etc of £100 per person.

Dinner will be from a set menu with 4 or 5 options for each of starter, main and dessert.

Bottles will be "priced" at £100 each, so if you are attending but not supplying any bottles, you'll need to pay something extra. Exactly how much won't be known until we've finalised how many bottles are in the tasting. Once who's bringing what is finalised, some folks will likely get some cash repaid, where they have supplied multiple bottles.

35ml pours.

Any bottles supplied must be supplied in advance - further details to come.

Advance payment will be requested at the beginning of September. Any advance payments not received, or bottles not received, by end of 15 September results in seat being forfeited and a reserve being offered the seat.

Bottles in flight 0 were provisionally as below. Once we have reconfirmations I'll ask for any updates in the intervening 5 years.

Further bottles uncovered in addition to the above:
  • Pousada
  • Serafim Cabral

I also confirm my availability to help set up on both days, should that be needed.

I will email you details on bottles I can supply a little later…

I suspect that a number of the ports in flight 0 may not be so stellar, and as pours will be 35ml, I think it would be sensible to have some other port to hand to quench the thirst. Other ports could include:
  • a tregnum of Graham 1970
  • various 1970 colheita ports
    • Taylor single harvest 75cl
    • Maynards 75cl
    • Palmer 75cl
    • Feuerheerd 75cl
    • Niepoort 75cl
    • Barão de Vilar 75cl
    • Devesa White 50cl

Any thoughts/comments on having the extra ports?

Would probably add £60-80 per person to the cost if we had say 5 extra ports.

Who are you three imposters? What have you done with the real JDAW / MC / MSC? Give them back now!

I'm usually the lone voice advocating restraint. And 23 pours of 35ml is still over a bottle per person.

(Mike - see if you can test their willpower with a picture of the 1970 Graham tregnum...)

I’m shocked, shocked, I tell you.

23 1970s, of which say 5 will be poor. Add back in 5 x 35ml pours of colheitas, and we're back at 23 x 35 = 805ml. And if everyone insists on a 100ml pour of G70 from tregnum, then we're at 905ml = 1.2 bottles of port per person.

Did I tell you I'm shocked?

Well there are many weeks ahead yet for people to come to their senses :D

Mike’s recent rearrangement of bottles shrank flight 0. Hence the risk of flight-0 thirst has increased, and has increased by enough to justify a tregnum of G70.

We are all like cardboard packaging on recycling day.

There is a direction in which we fold easily, and a direction in which we don’t.

Dalva
C da Silva

But dalvawines.pt/origin:
In 1933, Clemente da Silva, recently arrived from Brazil, fulfilled his life-long dream of becoming a producer of premium wines that would lead to the international expansion of his business: C. da Silva – an abbreviation of his own name. A year later, he registered the Dalva brand, a contraction of “da Silva”. Simple to pronounce and very Portuguese, the brand achieved rapid success in its different markets.

So potentially the same thing in different bottles.

This is the label from the C da Silva bottle. Charles is going to share the label from the Dalva bottle.

Would a C Da Silva bottle and a Dalva bottle both appearing be substantially different to a Warre and a BBR both appearing? I suppose in the second instance, the bottler is a UK bottler, so there's that.

I have been told definitively that the blend in C da Silva, Dalva and Presidential is exactly the same. The only difference is the brand name, which is related to the intended sales destination.

It was suggested to me this morning that as an attendee of flights 1-3 and a child of 1970 it would be rather churlish not to seek the completeness that attendance at flight 0 would offer. Might I be added to the waiting list please?

Note for bottle providers.

Some of the three-bottle sets will be completely used — one of the first two will be thought imperfect, so the third opened. But for some, the first two bottles opened will be deemed good and so the third not opened. Those unopened third bottles will then be re-cellared. On the days of this tasting they will not be coming to the B&F — that would be organisational hassle that just isn’t happening, so don’t ask.

Instead over the following year they will be returned to owners, likely by being transferred at a tasting.

But if not collected nor returned within one year, then they become available for team use. That is, after a year of failure of return — whether my fault or that of the theoretical owners — they will then become available for team tastings.

If you object, well, tough.

A similar message has been posted in the flights-1–4 thread.

Done. Better than evens chance of moving up to attendees.
