The Horizontal of 1970s, definite article, was held over two days and five flights, Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd October 2025, at the Boot & Flogger, as organised by Mike who was assisted by Julian.
1970 Gonzalez Byass. A lovely rose red colour, 50% opaque. Nosing of baked red fruit, sweet and slightly caramelised, with the fruit showing some signs of secondary development. Nice, smooth entry with the fruit showing strongly, but with a little bitterness on the mid-palate. Nice fruit, with a delicious dark bramble and rose that comes with a very impressive length finish. Rather lovely. 91/100. Double decanted 10 hours.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
[Sample taken on night and consumed on 13/10/25] Very pale rim but the colour is good in the centre. Palate is proper port with some mulled wine cinnamon and orange and milk chocolate notes. Still drinkable with considerable pleasure, but do not hold for the long term.
