The Horizontal of 1970s, definite article, was held over two days and five flights, Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd October 2025, at the Boot & Flogger, as organised by Mike who was assisted by Julian.
Tasting notes are going to get a little confusing for this tasting - there were two bottles of each wine being tasted. JDAW and I were on opposite sides of the table so tasting different bottles. My bottle of QH70 was decent, but not any of the wonderful words JDAW used in his description.
1970 Quarles Harris, Oporto bottled. Dark brick red in colour, 70% opaque. Gentle spiced red fruit on the nose. A little fiery on the palate, some sweet and elegant fruit, a bit of jellied fruit on a short finish. Pleasant but not great. 87/100. Double decanted 3 hours.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
Note taken on 12/10/25 from sample kindly bottled on night. Red centre, pale rim, somewhat browning in between. Good clear wine. Nose of spirit and spice and red fruit. Palate sweet with some licorice. Fruit pastilles. Finishes quite short.
