The Horizontal of 1970s, definite article, was held over two days and five flights, Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd October 2025, at the Boot & Flogger, as organised by Mike who was assisted by Julian.
1970 Gould Campbell, late bottled in 1974 by Eldridge Pope & Co. Ltd. of Dorchester, Dorset. A little more evolved in appearance with a lighter and browner rim compared to the 2 year bottling tasted alongside it; 50% opaque. Attractive nose of bruised apple and a little raspberry. Bright berry fruit with bright acidity. Lacking a little depth to the fruit compared to the 2 year bottling but the finish and the length of finish is very impressive. 89/100. Double decanted 3 hours.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
Note taken on 12/10/25 from sample kindly bottled on night. Darker than its sibling. Interesting nose of apple and blackberry crumble caught round the edges. Fruit is attractively tart with an almost Dubonnet note - a hint of herbal extract. Successful, but drier.
45% opacity, mature red-brown. Nose has dusty strawberries, white pepper. Good heft, not unlike it's brother alongside. Red fruits, finish perhaps a little more simple.
