The Horizontal of 1970s, definite article, was held over two days and five flights, Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd October 2025, at the Boot & Flogger, as organised by Mike who was assisted by Julian.
1970 Dow. Mature brick-red colour, 80% opaque. Fresh strawberry fruit on the nose. A lovely dry Dow style on the palate with expressive ripe fruit showing a nice complexity. Fresh style of fruit on the aftertaste and finish, with the extra acidity keeping the freshness nicely focused. I rather like this, but not enough to make it my Wine of the Event. 92/100. Double decanted 3 hours.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
Note taken on 12/10/25 from sample kindly bottled on night. A lovely mid garnet, looks mature but not over-mature. Cranberries on nose, palate is well fruited but very much the red currant spectrum, positively fresh, port. Acidity is definite. Very much to my taste.
50% opacity, rich red. Cranberry and blackberry on the nose. Full, rich, powerful, syrupy concentrated blackberries and cranberries, slightly dry finish (!). Super port, which improved in the glass.
