List of grape varieties permitted by the IVDP for use in production of Port
This is a list lifted off the IVDP website in November 2025 from a technical document last updated in December 2011.
This list is in the order lifted from the document. I might, in due course, sort it alphabetically and/or by colour - I presume b is for branca (white) and n is for negra (black).

114 rows, of which 47 end in "B", 66 end in "N", and 1 which has no suffix ("Cidadelhe").

I also have a PDF of Diario da Republica no. 243 from 12/2017 which may be slightly more current. I would attach it, but PDFs do not appear to be allowed as attachments.

Yes, that's the one!
In that document, there are 64 Tinto and 46 Branco that are authorized for Port. Plus an additional 1 Tinto and 4 Branco that are only authorized for Douro wines.

Also note that Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay, are only allowed in Douro DOC sparkling wine, not in DOC still wines. You have to 'downgrade' your wine's classification to Regional Duriense (or completely 'declassify' your wine, in which case it would be outside of the IVDP's purview) if you want to use those grapes (and others, like Syrah, petit verdot, etc) in your still wine.

Re: List of grape varieties permitted by the IVDP for use in production of Port
What impact does that have on the producer being able to market the wine? Does the producer have to ask for a lower price? Are distributors and exporters more reluctant to take it on as a product?MigSU wrote: ↑11:50 Fri 06 Mar 2026Also note that Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay, are only allowed in Douro DOC sparkling wine, not in DOC still wines. Re: List of grape varieties permitted by the IVDP for use in production of Port
Well, it's mostly down to the customer, producers (and the IVDP) assume that buyers will be willing to spend a bit more if they're buying DOC wines.Mike J. Provided you can find the right customers, classification doesn't really matter that much. But I can see how perhaps it could be easier to find the 'right' customer if your wine is DOC. I'm assuming first time Douro drinkers will go for DOC and not some wine that is made in the Douro territory but not classified.

Re: List of grape varieties permitted by the IVDP for use in production of Port
I am waiting for the time that someone in the Douro goes completely rogue and makes a Vinho Fortificado de Portugal which falls outside the scope of the IVDP. Almost as if it was a family reserve which hadn't been registered and recorded...

Re: List of grape varieties permitted by the IVDP for use in production of Port
AFAIK, you can't, all wine spirit (aguardente) in the Douro is controlled by the IVDP. Theoretically, anyway, so in reality you can produce it outside the scope of the IVD, if you can find a spirit supplier (which you can), but you can't sell it legitimately (or even have it at home/in the winery).Alex Bridgeman wrote: ↑23:54 Fri 06 Mar 2026 I am waiting for the time that someone in the Douro goes completely rogue and makes a Vinho Fortificado de Portugal which falls outside the scope of the IVDP. It's all a bit in the theoretical realm, everyone in the Douro can make fortified wine if they want to, IVDP be damned; they just can't sell it officially.
I forgot to mention that everyone that owns a plot of vineyard is allowed by the IVDP to produce a certain amount of Port, for personal consumption and ageing. Which then creates a massive, gaping hole through which thousands and thousands of litres of 'illegal' Port are produced.
