Is this Heaven?? No, It's Portugalia!

Post by Big Love »

Stopped in Portugalia Marketplace in Fall River, Massachusetts, USA yesterday. Huge Portuguese wine selection (1700 SKUs per the owner) including this Wall of Port (and some Madeira). Could not get the whole wall in photo (people)--but this is most of it.

It really does look like a sort of fortified wine paradise. I could spend a happy month drinking the Madeira selection.

That's a great pic, John!

Portugalia is a fun place to shop for Port as they have things that are hard to find anywhere else. Their prices are usually higher than market, but if they have something that you want and can't find anywhere else, you pay the man. They do have a few bargains sprinkled in, but not many. Yesterday, John picked up for me from Portugalia: 2 x Maynard's 2004 White Colheita and 1 x Quinta dos Murças 10 year old Tawny. I really like the Murcas 10 year old, but haven't tried the Maynard's White Colheita before. It's $20 cheaper than a Kopke White Colheita, so we'll see if it punches above it's weight. The Maynard's 10 year old White Port is very good as well as inexpensive. If you ever see one, pick it up and try it.

I shop there several times a year. They give me a decent discount on wine. The tinned fish selection is equally impressive as their wine selection. There's a large room just for Bacalhau and the frozen seafood selection is crazy.

Just down the street are a few great Portuguese restaurants to complete the trip.

We played against Fall River (Durfee HS) in high school soccer. The referees did not know any English. Same with New Bedford.
