Re: Port for sale by retailer
Don't you think that's rather expensive for a second port from a producer who was going through a weak period?
Re: Port for sale by retailer
Yes. One, just one, bought for novelty and rareness and I’ve-never-tasted-this-ness, rather than because I’m expecting a budget version of Fonseca 1966.

Tesco are now selling Quinta do Noval 2001 LBV for GBP9.75/bottle. Not showing as available online but it was in Tesco Gatwick last night at this price and my previous online orders show it at that price. As a matter of idle interest, they also tell me that is GBP13/litre!
It was not expressed as a sale price so it appears to be a permanent reduction in sale price. Give the other options are:
Dows Master Blend LBV @ GBP7.99 special (GBP10.99 normal)
Grahams LBV @ GBP11.62
Taylors LBV @ GBP10.97
Tesco LBV @ GBP7.18
it suggests Tesco see the Noval LBV as bottom end of the market, marginally above own label!

This is not just the view of Tesco, but the UK port trade in general. I have never understood why Noval LBV is so well priced compared to other unfiltered LBVs and am completely bemused why anyone would pay more £ for a Taylor or Graham filtered wine if they had the option of a reasonably mature (and therefore easily drinkable) Noval unfiltered. I remember having this discussing with Christian Seely (Managing Director of Noval) at a dinner he hosted on Roy's trip to the Douro in 2006. He tells me he can't understand it either!
One way to look at it is that the UK port trades madness is our oportunity

Enjoy.

Re: Port for sale by retailer
One of the vouchers that came with my receipt yesterday was promoting next week as a Tesco “Wine Festival† with various discounts being promised. I wonder if the Noval price might be a sale price put out in anticipation of that? The voucher was also promising 50% discounts, so it might be worth keeping an eye on the Port, in case they discount one of these.benread wrote:Tesco are now selling Quinta do Noval 2001 LBV for GBP9.75/bottle. Good prices.Benchmark Wine wrote:Fonseca Port 2000 ~ 12 @ $70 RP95+, ST95 "Saturated medium-deep ruby. Exotic aromas of black fruit liqueur, road tar, smoked meat and hot stones; this reminded me of a great ripe-year Hermitage. Hugely rich and dense, with compelling sweetness and pliancy but also sound framing acidity. Extremely youthful and very long on the aftertaste. Finishes with suave but strong tannins and excellent grip and thrust. Like the best examples of the vintage, this won't injure your palate if you broach a bottle today, but it's structured for extended aging." Stephen Tanzer
Quinta do Infantado Port 1992 ~ 4 @ $67 RP95 "There were only 1,000 cases produced of the 1992 Vintage Port, and they are not likely to languish on retailers' shelves. A saturated, black/purple color is followed by a huge, ripe, pure nose of jammy blackberry and cassis fruit that is vaguely reminiscent of such great 1990 Hermitages as Chapoutier's Le Pavillon, Jaboulet's La Chapelle, or Chave's red label Cuvee Cathelin. Awesome concentration, massive body, an unctuous texture oozing with fruit, glycerin, and extract, and a blockbuster finish all suggest this will be a monumental port. Drink it between 2000-2030." Robert Parker
Quinta do Noval Silval Port 2000 ~ 9 @ $30 WS94 "Super-dark and powerful. Shows raisin, spice, coffee and violet aromas. Full-bodied, very chewy, with lots of grip and loads of fruit. Very long in the mouth. Outstanding young Port. Super-value here. Best after 2012." Wine Spectator

Re: Port for sale by retailer
Sainsbury (UK) have a sale which ends on Sunday 8th November that gives 25% off all wine including poo and port if you buy any 6 bottles.
For those looking for a cheap bottle of port you can have Dow Trademark Reserve (posh ruby) which already has 50% discount at £5.50(ish) and then an extra 25% off if you buy 6 - about £25 for 6 bottles.
They also have Quinta da Eira Velha 2000 at £15 per bottle (as part of an any 6 bottle purchase). I have no idea what this tastes like.
Go. Look. Buy if you like what you see.

Re: Port for sale by retailer
Those are some good deals!
I don't know what the Eira Velha is like, but I tasted the regular Martinez in Jan. 2006 and, judging from my TN, didn't really like it:

Now, it could have been in an odd phase of course, or it could just have been a bad bottle. Anyway, at £15 I would just buy 3, try one, and if you don't like it, keep the other two for a couple more years to see if they get any better. What could go wrong?Smells like sour sweets and cooked vegetables. Odd. Also some spices (sage, cloves). This is incredibly thin on the palate, and extremely acidic, combined with artificial sweetness. Not recommended. 78/79

Re: Port for sale by retailer
Hmm!if it does taste like that then it might just achieve that rare status of a Port that can’t even be used for cooking! Not sure I’d like my sauces flavoured with sour sweets and artificial sweetness!RonnieRoots wrote:What could go wrong?Smells like sour sweets and cooked vegetables. Odd.
