1988 Fonseca Guimaraens vintage port

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Deep red in colour, opaque centre. Very sweet, dusty blackberries on the nose. Great impact on the palate, lots of fruit in the mouth with a sweetness balanced by a streak of acidity. The tannins are masked by the huge waves of fruit that just keep washing over your tongue. The aftertaste is big and long lasting, dominated by bitter cherries. This is going to be a big wine when it settles down. If you have some of these want the thrill of a blast of power, then open one now. If you like your port soft and elegant then tuck these away for another 20 years. 88/100 but will reach 90+. Drunk after 24 hours in the decanter on 2 October 2008.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
