1970 Butler Nephew vintage port

Post by uncle tom »

From an owc bought three years ago. I've not popped one of these since early '06, so time to re-visit.

Bottle showed very slight signs of seepage, level unknown as glass too dark.

Decanted reasonably cleanly, nice colour - typical for the vintage.

First sip - weak nose, bit harsh on palate..

D + 8 hours - nose still weak, OK on palate but lacking integration. I have a hunch that more time will pay dividends

- More anon..

+ 27 hours (kept at 10C)

Now this wine has found itself. The nose is still a little weak, but the palate is fully integrated.

For the vintage, this is in the second division, but of all the VP's I've had this year, it is just about up to the average, and probably a little besides.

In another decade, it will probably be looking a bit tired, but for today a very pleasant and fully mature quaff.

Score 5-4

A few hours later, and it was showing noticeably better. Another 24, and its still looking very good.

One for a 48hr decant I think..
