A Port Timeline

A project I’ve been thinking about for a while is an interactive Port timeline. The aim is to provide at-a-glance answers to such vital questions as: ‟did Taylor’s acquire Vargellas before or after Graham’s acquire Malvedos?” and ‟which is older, Pocas or Messias?”.

A first draft is now available in beta and I would appreciate any comments about both the data and the timeline software. It should work in most browsers, although IE doesn’t support the typeface so doesn’t look as pretty

Raw lists of the dates are available for the shippers; quintas; declared years; and other regulation, politics and shippers.

Current areas where improvement is needed: declared years (particularly 19th Century and earlier); shippers towards the end of the alphabet (e.g. Taylor; Warre); navigational links for particular decades.

Thoughts? Corrections? Errors? All gratefully received!

It looks fine in IE7 but the arrow scrolling doesn't work so you have to drag it along with the mouse. But very good work indeed

I'm still trying to fill in/correct dates and make other improvements and would appreciate anything that I've missed out.

What do you think of the sort of material that is on it at the moment? Something I've (semi-)deliberately left out are the biographic details of the main shippers. Would that be be worth including or not?

Yes, I certainly would be delighted for it to be a permenant part of if you think it would be a useful addition. I'll try to get it into a more complete stage first; I think there's still quite a bit of work I'd like to do, but moving it over shouldn't be a problem. I've added a function so you can load the timeline starting at a particular year: (e.g. http://www.jacob-head.com/port/timeline ... ?year=1750 &c.) which might allow it to be better integrated into (e.g. perhaps there could be links in the TN sorted by date index to that point on the timeline, or something).
