Fiftieth Anniversary - Wednesday 19th May

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

2010 is the fiftieth anniversary of both the 1960 vintage and Uncle Tom. To celebrate this happy coincidence, we have decided to organise a horizontal of 1960 vintage port. The location will be London, but the exact venue will be chosen nearer the time.

Anyone who would be interested in helping to celebrate Uncle Tom's half century, please say so here. Please also mention any 1960 vintages that you may be able to offer for this tasting.

Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

I'm in - and I hope that's my Cockburn you've already added to the list as it's the only 1960 I have

I will need to secure permission and special dispensation, being a Wednesday. Subject to that, it would seem a suitable moment to open one of my 2 remaining bottles of 1960 Dow, laid down for me at birth by my grandfather. I also believe his firm imported them.

Yep, you are right, this goes straight into a tasting. In this case I do not mind since it is Tom's birthday, a 1960 horicontal is a good thing and I like the 1960s Ports very much. Have also one bt da Silvas Quinta do Noval 1960 which was not metioned so far. All in all I think I can handle this 88)

Fair enough. Both of my grandfathers did that already. I married a Berkshire girl, but technically, she was already living in the US.

Anyway, glad to come. I'll most likely be alone, but will firm that up closer to the date.

No 60's in my cellar, but I'll look around. Do two 85's equal a 60?

Looking forward to it,

The tasting will be limited to 14 people so we may not be able to add a +1 later.

Sorry, this will be a 1960 line-up only but we are likely to have some bottles that can be "adopted" at reasonable cost. Keep an eye on this thread as things evolve, I'm sure it will all work out fine

Got it, thanks! Not sure how well it would travel from here anyway. But again, I'll keep my eye out here. I've got a 1970 horizontal going for my 40th this year, so I've been scouring some of the local shops anyway.

Just a quick note to say that I've just updated the first post on this thread to reflect the people who have said that they would like to attend this offline. Unless anyone has an alternative suggestion, would the Crusting Pipe seem an appropriate place to welcome an American visitor with a Berkshire wife to his first port offline in London?

This is how my husband likes to communicate with me. There's no longer open, live, one-on-one discussing. Ok, so he asked. Sure he can go. But that depends on a lot of things.

This is going to be expensive. I suspect that offering to share a bottle of Cruz 1975 won’t be enough: this might even take as much as two bottles of 1970.

You say that as if sharing two bottles of 1970 VP is a bad thing!

Despite progress made at a dinner with JDAW1 while in Paris, SCP-DFW still does not drink Port with her husband.

Attendee list updated.

If JDAW forgets to ask for permission, perhaps TPF could see the first, multi-location offline with simultaneous offlines with the same theme in London and Paris on 19th May.

Hutcheson???

Look, when I, Supreme Commander, orders you boys "to have fun", it does indeed mean to make the most of this tasting. But even if Hutcheson ever did declare in 1960 or any other year for that matter, you're not allowed to have Hutcheson. Period.

Carry on.

At this stage we are juggling. Say what you have, and it will go in the mix with what others have. Somebody will suggest that person A bring bottle α, person B bring β, etc. Please, what 1960s do you have (that you might be willing to contribute)?
