May 5, 6 or 7
Anyone in London on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday night next week and fancy getting together for a drink?
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

Perhaps, then, a possible General Election theme (ie a Port from an election year)
Overwhelming (97), Unlikely (92), Not for turning (83), Decimal (70) etc

I declare that 3 of us (Mark, Chris and me) to be a sufficient number to make an offline.
Any preference as to venue? Crusting Pipe at 6:30pm? Blind bottles or declared bottles with bottles to be of vintage port from the year when there was a general election in the UK?

Re: May 5, 6 or 7
If Crusting Pipe is most convenient then I will second that. UKGE theme sounds good to me; I'm told there are some good ports vintaged in General Election years that weren't General Declarations; and if it's blind as then I might have half a chance of guessing the year!AHB wrote:I declare that 3 of us (Mark, Chris and me) to be a sufficient number to make an offline.

Re: May 5, 6 or 7
Placemats would be most welcome. Thank you.
Attendees will be Mark, Chris Doty and me. Venue will be The Crusting Pipe at 6:30pm on Thursday May 6. Each person attending will bring a bottle of vintage port (which also permits single quinta and second label vintage ports) which will be presented blind (should we colour code them red, blue and gold?) and not identified until the following day.
Is there any further information needed for the tasting mats?

Ryan Air, Jeff. Don't bring anything with you - no carry on, no briefcase, no ipod. Nothing. Round trip should cost about $50.AHB wrote:If you can make a quick flight to London, I'll spring you a bottle! You'll probably spend more getting into London by train and then to the Crusting Pipe by taxi than you will getting from Dublin to Heathrow and back.

The Picadilly Line goes straight from Heathrow to Covent Garden in less than an hour for about the cost of a glass of port!Glenn E. wrote:Ryan Air, Jeff. Unfortunately, Ryanair doesn't fly to Heathrow so you would have to take a train from Gatwick, Stansted or Luton and then the Tube to Covent Garden. Or you could fly with http://www.aerlingus.com to Heathrow but the flights would be two to three times as expensive as Ryanair. The cheapest return flight from Dublin to London on 6th and 7th May is currently 137 Euro including tax. With two passangers and the cost of a hotel in London this would be a very expensive "bring-a-bottle" off-line. Close to $800 rather than the $50 mentioned by Glenn

Re: May 5, 6 or 7
Of course, this all assumes that Irish airspace is open...
Seriously, if you do decide to take the $50 Ryanair flight there are very good train services from Gatwick, Stansted and Luton airports costing in the order of $30 each way. Once in London the tube will cost about $6 each way.
If you need to stay overnight in London then PM or email me.

I'm not sure which Ryanair AHB is looking at but the one that goes from Dublin to London currently costs between 137 and 150 Euro depending on which airport you fly to on tose dates. The Aer Lingus alternative is currently 300-400 Euro!DRT wrote: The cheapest return flight from Dublin to London on 6th and 7th May is currently 137 Euro including tax.

A surprising correlation between election years and good vintages in the last hundred years - I'm not sure about attending this bash, but if I do, I have 20 of these years to choose from..1801 co-option · 1802 · 1806 · 1807 · 1812 · 1818 · 1820 · 1826 · 1830 · 1831 · 1832 · 1835 · 1837 · 1841 · 1847 · 1852 · 1857 · 1859 · 1865 · 1868 · 1874 · 1880 · 1885 · 1886 · 1892 · 1895 · 1900 · 1906 · 1910 (Jan) · 1910 (Dec) · 1918 · 1922 · 1923 · 1924 · 1929 · 1931 · 1935 · 1945 · 1950 · 1951 · 1955 · 1959 · 1964 · 1966 · 1970 · 1974 (Feb) · 1974 (Oct) · 1979 · 1983 · 1987 · 1992 · 1997 · 2001 · 2005 · 2010
