Smith Woodhouse 1980 VP
Smith Woodhouse 1983 VP
Smith Woodhouse 1984 LBV
Smith Woodhouse 1985 VP
Smith Woodhouse Madalena 1995 SQVP
Smith Woodhouse 1995 LBV

Attendees (+addl tasters, +non tasters):
g-man +2, +1
SushiNorth +2, +1

----------
Time for the next NY tasting!
I've two goals, first I am hoping for an influx of NY members -- either from Eric's article or from our own outreach (bring a friend!) -- and I'd like to give everyone a chance to get introduced before we do the Dow tasting. Second, of course, I'd like to drink port.

LBVs have been suggested several times, so let's try doing an educational LBV/VP tasting. I've the following bottles which may be of interest:

Smith Woodhouse LBV 1984,
Smith Woodhouse VP 1983
Rozes LBV 1994
Rozes VP 1994

(I've a Taylor lbv 94, too, but i doubt it's time to open it's VP brother :) ).

[strike]Beacon Restaurant worked well last time, so I'd suggest we aim for a little earlier (say 5pm) on Sunday, January 9th. Thoughts?[/strike]

Rozès 1997 needs several days of decanting. It’s terrible until the third day. I don’t know about the Rz94, but maybe it is similar.

Quite, we've judged it as a 4 day decant.

It sounds like will switch this day to Saturday Jan 8th. Sunday was only practical because Beacon has BYO on sundays; as we are to hold the tasting at g-man's place, it's BYO any day he declares it so.

I certainly don't mind a LBV tasting but perhaps we could up our game in honor of our surprise guest.

Agreed: now is the moment for the 1900/1904/1908 triple horizontal. Cockburn, Dow, Graham, Sandeman (all declared combinations).

Perhaps we can at least link the lbvs and the vps. In other words, a Warre's lbv and a Warre's vp. The lbvs and vps will not necessarily be the same years but at least we can see if there is some house consistency in style. I can't imagine how many combos Julian might be able to handle on his own; for us mere mortals, one combo per each two people? I could supply 1984 Smith Woodhouse LBV, 1984 Warre LBV, 1986 Warre LBV, 1989 Ramos Pinto LBV, 1990 Churchill LBV (?), 1990 Offley LBV, 1991 Ferreira LBV, 1991 Graham LBV, 1992 Niepoort LBV, 1994 Osborne LBV, 1994 Ramos Pinto LBV, and a few newer ones.

I could supply 1992 Niepoort VP and 1992 Niepoort LBV for one of the matchings. (Corrected from 1991).

Nice, Jay. I don't have any clear matches, but i have some near-match VPs (Ferreira 94, Warre 85 which is tagged for drinking only at a TPF tasting, Osborne 95). I've also got a few of those Smith Woodhouse 84's and must say they are a phenomenal LBV and ought to make an appearance at our tasting.

I also could be convinced to bring wedding port (Smith Woodhouse 1995 LBV) if someone has a comparable match for it.

I will be bringing at least 3 people with me (wife (non-drinker), brother (attended the tawny tasting), and sister-in-law).
I will also encourage one of the guys from the Sandeman tasting to join us :)

It would help me in deciding whether to attend to understand what is happening. Is this a port tasting? A dinner with wine, including some port? I appreciate the generosity of Jeff's hosting a dinner but I have to admit that what interests me is a port tasting.

Obviously, whatever the majority of folks want to do is fine (and I have no wish to stop the majority from doing whatever it wishes) but we should be clear in advance so that each of us can decide whether to attend.

Some guests dont have any port at all and there seems to be a lack of inventory of lbv/vp wines that we could probably only come up with 4-6 bottles the current theme.

This is foremost a port tasting first, perhaps if we could think up another theme perhaps it might be easier for bottles to be provided.

There will happen to be some wines for dinner though especially for the lady's who do not wish to drink port with.

Right now the only bottles that have been suggested have been the 91 lbv niepoort and 91 vp niepoort.

we could potentially do a 76 colheita tasting,

i have the warres
the royal optorto is easily gotten
as is the krohn's
and the noval's

To add:

I can easily get the sw 95

so our line up would currently be

niepoort 91 vp/lbv
sw 95 vp /lbv

we can also do a sw line up
sw lbv 92 has been declared and can probably be picked up
as with a warres 92 lbv witha warres 91 vp

I have seen this bottle for sale in NYC at bearable price, and they probably have more of it. While i have one bottle of it myself, it's being saved for an occasion.
Personally, I'm up for sticking to the original plan, tho.

Before we get the SW 92/91, are there any other match-ups we can find (perhaps from other houses)? otherwise we'll wind up with 3 pairs (6 bottles) of sw, and 3 pairs of non-sw (niepoort, Warres, and Rozes). Another thought: given that there will be surprises, should we keep to 5 pairs instead of 6?

Perhaps a better question is, how many will be attending?

I am getting confused. Rather than the total number of attendees, which is relevant to Jeff in terms of dinner and how many folks he can fit, can we instead list folks who are attending for the purpose of tasting port? That will allow us to see if we are quorate for a port tasting and to see how many bottles of vp and lbv that we need.

Right now, we have Niepoort vp and lbv 1992 and Rozes vp and lbv 1994. That is enough for four to six port tasters. I can supply Warres vp 1983 or 1985 to match Warres lbv 1984 or 1986 and can also supply lbv and vp matchings for Smith Woodhouse, Grahams and Osborne working off the list of lbvs that I posted. The Graham and Osborne would be exact matches for 1991 and 1994 and the SW would be 1984 lbv and 1985 vp. I am happy to produce any of these matchings but need at least a week as the bottles will have to be shipped to me from Conn. (I have the Niepoort in-house).

Confirmed Port tasters:
Sushi+1
g-man
jdaw
dominic
johnz
jfacciol

Guests:
above + possible 6 (3-4 non drinkers)

We have confirmed 7 tasters Jay.

looks to be about 12-14 people total.

I think you're correct we should stick with a Niepoort vp and lbv 92
and Rozes vp and lbv 94.

and I'll throw in 2 fonsecas from the 70s to round out this tasting.

Sushi+2 (3 tasters), +1 wife nontaster/DD :)
That's 8, if tbird confirms, that'll make it 9.

Monkey wrench (feel free to dismiss this as a crazed suggestion):
As we progress down this, i had a different thought (while g-man is busy ruining surprises heh) -- have we done a SWC tasting? Given that SWC is one of the primary LBV producers, i wonder if we might put together an SWC VP tasting, with a few parallel LBVs for educational purposes? I've got VP's from 77, 83, 85, & 91 (& 94, but not ready), and LBVs from 84 and 95. The SWC SQVP Madalena 95 does appear to be sourcable in NYC, and probably is near-ready.
Then, for comparison purposes, we could add some F or W from suitable years. That brings us to 8 confirmed tasters, 7 SWC bottles, and a few others.
Thoughts?

I think we can do a side by side blind to make it interesting.

Niepoort vp and lbv 92
and Rozes vp and lbv 94.
any of the SW years you have v any of the F years (I have all of the years you've mentioned on-site)

+ 1 guess that mystery bottle.

so 7 bottles for 8 tasters and what should be a fun tasting event too.

It sounds like a terrific party but not really a port tasting.

I am going to sit this one out.

Greetings all! Happy Holidays.

Please count me in a 1 person for Jan 8th. Please send me the address and time. As per the bottle, if there someone who has something I can adopt?
