Small bottles to hold tasting samples

At yesterday’s Old & Odd in New York we discussed AHB’s 5cl spirit bottles, that he uses for take-out remnants and to save and post tasting samples for others. Consensus was that the narrow opening makes them difficult to fill.

For distribution to the team should I buy a packet of 0038-06 (contains 48 ‘bottles’, costs $28.32, each holds 60cl, height=77mm, diameter=40mm)? Is there better?

They seem to have the advantage (for posting at least) of not being glass. Cuts down on weight and risk of breakage. If they come with packaging as well, so much the better!

Was allowing a week or few to pass to see who wants. Will get them.


Edit: one packet ordered. Will keep some State-side, and will bring some to blighty. Of course, if you should ever be lucky enough to receive a full one in the post, don’t throw it away after drinking the contents. Instead make somebody else happy.

They can come with tamper-proofing clear shrink bands, but I didn’t bother with those.

60cl could hardly be described as a tasting sample though, more like four fifths of a bottle. Is Julian having trouble with units?

I have salvaged a miniature Jack Daniels bottle and have a further three which I intend to use. I am just wondering what to do with the current contents. All that is required is a small funnel.

In addition to a small number of the 60cl (I love that size) sample bottles, I have also invested 79p into a small food grade plastic funnel.

The use of a funnel has to be trialled before being offered to everyone as a working concept - when I bought it I didn't have any miniature bottles with me (I realise this may come as a surprise to some who read this post, but I admit I was not properly prepared for this shopping trip into town) and I wasn't even sure that the funnel would fit into the neck of the miniature spirit bottles I am currently using.

Happily, it did and will likely make an appearance at the Crusting Pipe on Thursday.

The source for the funnel was the Wokingham branch of Robert Dyass.

Eric D recently posted to me a sample of 1983 Rocha colheita, in a seemingly usual bottle, but with a non-standard lid labelled Martinelli’s Gold Medal 100% Apple Juice, bar code 0-412448-1. Martinelli’s doesn’t make 2 fld oz product, so I’m guessing that only the lid has been changed.

Another three sets of forty-eight have been ordered for use in the UK. The New Yorkers are invited to take a small number of dozens of these, if they would be useful.

Here is a picture of my latest idea in use. So far, no evidence of any contamination from the bags and they certainly did not leak on the way home. They also sat very neatly in my bag - taking up much less room.

I am wondering what Mrs Bridge will make of her sample!

Nothing I have noticed so far after about 20 hours. I would also asume these are designed not to do that, given how sensitive very young babies can be to impurities. Some I have seen are described as "BPA and DEHP free" - whatever that is!

I might get a few and do a test with water to see if i can detect anything.

What looks particularly advantageous in the context of port is that it is presumably possible to really minimise air contact as you close the bags off.
